Cape Cod Cranberry Bog Harvest Season

Along with the Autumn season comes a well anticipated, delightful spectacle for all, and a celebration for many Cape Codders. Much of this can be seen on tours or by stopping at scenic overlooks along the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We hosted 2 tour groups this past week, full of cycling enthusiasts.

'Cape Cod Today' in their 9/24 issue, highlighted the industry of Cape Cod Cranberry Bogs. While it was all very interesting, i enjoyed the glimpse into the life of a Cape Cod Cranberry Bog owner and operator.

As a life long Cape Cod resident, I had known one thing for certain. Do not miss the annual Cape Cod Cranberry Festival.

(FOR THOSE WHO DID, THE WELLFLEET OYSTER FESTIVAL IS ONLY WEEKS AWAY. The Oysterfest easily takes first place amongst our Cape Cod Annual Festivals. By the way, the Oysterfest in Wellfleet, is 10 minutes north of us, and brought almost 20,000 people to Cape Cod last year. The event is always the third weekend in October.

In particular, i thought it was interesting to learn of both, wet and dry methods of Cranberry harvesting. The dry harvest option involves using a wide tractor attachment, that shakes the ripe fruit right off the vine for collection.
HIstorically looked at as more common, today's most recent irrigation technology has allowed for the wet method of cranberry harvesting. While more efficient, our bogs are flooded more commonly for large surface water screening. The ripened fruit, after floating to the water's surface, is then collected in mass amounts, to fill almost 40% of the Ocean Spray trucks. Thus, giving you a great idea of how much Cape Cod contributes to our country's Cranberry production.

And Ocean Spray owns just about every one of these bogs. If not, they buy the fruit from the owners. Hooray big brother.

Stay tuned for Oysterfest update.

the NEW Olde tavern motel

This is Dave. Dave, please meet our incredible base of old tavern family guests!
David amabello, is his full name, and was once seen bussing tables with Brandon 20 years ago at LoCicero's.

He has travelled much, however born and raised on cape cod. His wealth of local knowledge is limitless, should you be interested in nauset or skated beach, the cape cod rail trail, or a relaxing cruise up to provincetown, for a whale watch, or down to chatham, for a boat tour around Monomoy.

He has my energy, and a connection with my family that goes unparalleled, therefore, he offers just that much more to our family business' highly reputed guest services.

If I could have every single guest meet David, who is by my side, in everyday business, i would be over-joyed.

Every day he meets a new guest, im elated to know he is positively influencing their time here, or vacation in general.

While undoubtedly aidans favorite "uncle" , he will surely be in attendance at aidans 4 th birthday on august 21!

all are invited, but he is a popular man, so I believe the place might be close to full.

Try us, by phone or book online, see you soon!

Mrs. A, this pic was one of daves first days, be proud. I am. Much love, hope you are doing real well.

everything is in full motion for one fun summer season! the crowds are certainly here, waters at skaket beach, our bayside option, has been nearly 80 degrees. while not quite as warm, nauset beach, on the national seashore, with all its natural beauty, has been very productive for fishing, as well as surfing.
our pool is sometimes preferred by many offering much tranquility, and the 85 degree water is also nice!

with local fairs, nitely activities, and more to do with the family or with your travel company, everyone has been having a great time.

now, if the world was perfect, we would have no problems. with every phone line ringing, with questions, reservations, and/or cancels, as well, I'm providing the answer to a very miniature problem.

We very good number of some of our all time favorite annual visitors presently here for the next week...

it makes each day a blast. our aim here is to make some new friends who mesh well with my families like the, Garrity's, Lavery's, Thompson's, An's, LaFace's.

Wih the party known as the "patti mahoney" annual event quickly approaching, I could imagine those appreciating a late booking, at Orleans #1 ranked hotel, here really having a unique time on grounds... Thank you by the way, to everyone, you make my crunch time a breeze.

So in summary, life is nice. Not to be used as a forum to those who whine. The aforementioned specials listed on site, have prerequisites, such as happy faces only, smiles and relaxed attitudes. I have your low rate, booking online gets you such rates.

Warm front - spring is here

Red Sox opening day is quickly approaching, as is April 1, when the Olde Tavern shifts into full gear.

Heads up to all those who like to Fresh water fish while soaking up some nature... i am happy to share with you all that our local ponds have officially been stocked. The annual Carl Malm and Co. fishing weekend is one I look forward to. How could I forget Mister Mark Haradan.

With downtown buzzing, a sure sign of spring, most everything is beginning to open back up. Cooke's on march 19. The Lobster Claw and Captain Elmer's should be ready for the crowds come april 1. Don't fret though, the Lost Dog consistently serves a great variety, including those same seafood dishes. While on the topic, it deserves to be listed in the top tier of our Orleans restaurants.

On a recreational note, since our building here sits a block away from the bike trail, its smooth and very convenient to use as an access location.

Each season, in April, we get busier. More bike racks on the guests' cars, all packed to the brim. Couples, or the Brady Bunch, no matter how many bikes you have, we have the space for them to stay dry, and safe. Without advance bookings, weekdays are still ususally safe. But weekend reservations, are necessary.

60 degrees felt great, the weekend shall be a beauty, Very comfortable conditions.
For those who do not own, or just do not want to mess with the bike rack,
Orleans Cycle is where its at.

Recently renovated and bridged to avoid riding along the road, the Cod Rail Trail is becoming more and more popular. As we always have catered to large groups, weddings, family reunions and all that, we now host many different cycling tour groups.

If anyone is up for stomping your own trails, exploration, and packing in a bit more adventure, there are numerous scenic areas, town preservation areas, Nickerson State Park,
and much more. Baker's Pond is always great, much like Paw Wah Point.

So here we go now, my good friends and wonderful people - Here's to the 2010 season,
April 65 per nite! May 79 per nite! Stay 3 nites and get 4th for free in April and May.

To those wondering, a quick update : (i have to say thank you to everyone for our lovely cards over the winter, Aidan loved seeing the pictures. I saw some children, that are growing faster than time is moving!!!)

Tony and Carol are both doing very well, as is Lauren, my younger sister of three years. I am slowly integrating her into our business. I have Aidan in pre school, quite the social little man,
he will be turning 4 this August 21. Every year, a big party happens. Every year, on my birthday a big party happens too. St Patty's Day.

Well, everyone, Aidan and I send all our love and our best wishes!
Pops would like to say hi, but is frightened to use a computer for anything other than a paperweight.

Anyone have any topics in mind you'd like to hear about? After all, this is to keep you current, filled in, and a spot in which i will post coupons, and promo codes when the time is right. Stay tuned...More importantly, Stay well
